Desktop Based To-do List?

Can somebody suggest me a free, desktop based To-Do List? Desktop based is important, because I need something that keeps staring at me (yes, yes!) and not something for which I have to remember to go to a website. Also, I do not need anything fancy – simple, light-weight To-Do list that is sitting on my desktop all the time. I used Wallnote, which is a web-based product, but can be displayed on the desktop using active desktop feature of windows. However, I keep switching between wired and wireless network in the office and most of the times do not switch off my laptop between office and home. This change of network etc. creates problems with the web-page disappearing.

I guess you got it now. Any suggestions?

  1. You can ask your company to build it. I am definitely a customer. Online To-Do list, but if there is no network, it still cache everything locally and sync the data when network is back.

      1. DeskListAppy Todo is good so far for me. Like the desktop version for both mac and windows. clean design.

  2. Mohan: I do not use Outlook Express for mails. So, opening it just for To-Do list does not satisfy the criteria of it being light-weight by any means.

  3. outlook express is industy standard. whole world use it. i have no clue why u or ur employer doesnt use outlook xpress.

no wonder why google doesnt like ms haha

  4. I am not here to defend my employer or anything and hence I will not do that. I have the choice of using anything I like, including outlook express. Its *my* choice not to use it. Whatever I use, I like it better than Outlook Express.

And FYI, the *whole* world does not use it. You do not need to look too hard. Just look around for the companies where IBM takes care of these stuff. Lotus Notes is very conveniently being used. (No – I do not use Lotus Notes either).

Any discussion from usage perspective or technical perspective is welcome. But no stupid provocative remarks will be allowed here.

  5. whole world might not use it..but most of the world definity use it…world’s largest processor maker INtel uses outlook. my point was if for some reason you use outlook u wont need so called “light-weight-to-do”. outlook provide task to do that.

you like some mail client X but that does’t mean ur X is better than outlook. outlook is the oldest software of it’s kind and hence the best(accord to me).anything made my ms is gr8.

  6. Sure. I will never argue with whatever reasons you have to like or dislike a particular product. If something being from MS is reason enough for you to like it, so be it. I am not trying to dictate what you should or should not like.

But the same freedom is there for others too. I have a different criteria for liking products and outlook express does not fit the bill given other options I have. Not even with its “To-Do” List. And that’s what it is. Period.

Anyway, to end it from my side, I think I will choose one between MyLife Organized or Post-It Notes. Unless of course, somebody suggests me a better alternative. Thanks Ashok, for the links.

  7. Hi Jaya,

You need not use Outlook Express to use the Post-It facility it offers. Just open one To Do thingie in there and Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V on your Desktop.

Thats what I used througout my 2 years at L.

    Tc

  8. Jaya – I dont understand what is a to do list. But from what u described it looks like I had the same problem that you are facing now. I used a soft POST IT. Type Free POst it notes on google and u will get a lot of free post it notes
install them and it is jus like ur hard post its. Good Luck…

  9. Click on Start –> Run –> Notepad

Put your notes there .. it is actually very cool , it doesnt care whether you are wired or using Wifi 🙂

  10. hmm …. you all think very complicated..programs…sites…. You need to think outside the box …. THE SIMPLEST TO DO LIST : Create a new bitmap image , edit it , add in your “to do list” AND THEN JUST SET IT AS BACKGROUND on your desktop !!!!! THe simplest thing 🙂 See you later 😉 ( if i remember to come back to this site , if not un1_simplu_baiat@yahoo.com in case you have any such problems 🙂

  11. Netnote, Turbonote, Avedesk, Yahoo WIdgets — take your pick.

  12. I wrote one in delphi a long while back that’s available on my website. It’s nothing special and needs to be updated … but it *is* a todo list … a simple one.

  13. much ado about nothing AT ALL, just because that certain someone happens to be a ….., and then they say that this world is changing…haha

  14. Hi!!! I dunno if this is gonna sort your prob or not… but perhaps u can give a shot to this thing below:
    http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/

Is from Mozilla(dunno if its open source or not..) Had remembered ur requirement & it hit me that perhaps it might just solve ur prob…
But, perhaps u urself could try writing a small application that runs in the background, takes the required parameters and inserts it into some kindda list… Then displays the updated stuff by month/week/day/hour…WHATEVER…. 🙂

    ps:
Just happened to stumble by your blog in the cribbing section: Then while reading the stuff, realized that u’re one of those different people who (perhaps)care for the society…I’m positively one of them…have been actively involved with “Youth for Equality” forum, fighting against the reservation bill…. Was with its national coordination committee for quite sometime till more capable people were ready to shoulder the responsibilty… We finally landed at a “legal-compro” sortta thing… U gotta b knowing what…

    Warm Regards,

  15. Hi Jaya,

Found your discussion when I started looking for the exact same thing. Among all the suggestions made here & my extensive search (a whole afternoon :-), I finally found something thats a good fit to what I was looking for. Thought you and others with similar need may find this helpful:-
    http://www.brothersoft.com/desktop-icalendar-lite-download-71419.html

The software is called Desktop iCalendar Lite (free) incase the above links don’t work.

    Cheers!

  16. I too was looking for a solution and found the best is Rainlender (as mentioned by someone above). As of now, I can’t find one with a huge todo list like I wanted, but it is there on the desktop. You can pick from plenty of skins that other people have made, but I plan on making my own with the “todo” nice and big.

  17. I’ve been looking for a good one, I finally found one I like, that works, and DOES NOT require you to be online. Check out tododesklist, you can google it or just go to http://www.dextronet.com/to-do-desklist.php
This works awesome so far. It is free, and works.

Before I was using I Forgot the Milk sidebar gadget, but it suddenly stopped working, so I found this, good luck.

  18. Try the free version of DeskListAppy. Works for both windows and mac. Also, sync with iphone.
It is very helpful for my business!
    Good Luck!

  19. i guess it depends on just what you’re looking for…i wanted a small, always present on my desktop, to do list that you can check off as you go, not a separate sticky for every task on the list. I tried MANY of the links above, and Rainlendar is EXACTLY what i wanted! There is a calendar, todo list & events list that you can move around on their own, (each a little individual widget) and have any or all of the 3 on your desktop..no logging in or needing to be online, all in all..perfect 🙂
