Old World Charm

Probably it was the after effect of watching Shahid Kapoor in “Jab We Met”, I rented the VCD of Vivah and watched it the day before. Sooraj Barjatya touts of it as recreating the ‘old world charm’. The movie has become a hit, but I really would not want to say much of the movie. I mean it has been quite sometime since people have been calling water as पानी in small towns and rural areas and not जल. If you don’t know what I am referring to, watch the movie! [Arr… not that I am recommending it]

But the songs certainly have some old world charm to them. Not in the series of some of those immortal songs, but certainly in the series of some sweet ones like “jab tak poore na hon phere saat (जब तक पूरे ना हो फेरे साथ)”. And I like it when music and singing is not an concoction of special effects. However, there is one song which was not there in the movie, whose concept I found kind of unique, new and nice. “Kya ye wohi ladka/ladki hai [क्या ये वही लड़का/लड़की है]”. One stanza has been shown in a recording being played in the movie, but not the rest of it. This is a song where the family members of both the boy and the girl to be married soon, are recalling their childhoods. In past, songs have mostly talked only of the childhood of the girl because she is leaving the family. I kind of liked the idea of both the families sharing the emotion that their kids are now going to have a different life and that they have grown up now. Find the song on musicindiaonline here. 5th song on the list – “Kal Jisne Janam Yahan Paya”
