Saw the movie “Dr. Kotnis Kee Amar Kahani” (translation: The immortal story of Dr. Kotnis) yesterday. Before happening to find this VCD recently, the only significance of this movie for me was that since I knew this name, many a times I had an edge in Hindi Dumb Charades 🙂
But after seeing the movie I searched for Dr. Kotnis and realized that it was based on a real story. And little more of google search shows that he is still very well respected in China and who-is-who of the political power in China still pay respect to his family on various occasions. China had even released stamps in his memory before India did.
On a lighter note, when I saw the movie showing him marrying a Chinese woman, I wondered how come nobody from their family in that era found it “objectionable” – something which is trend these days. 🙂 Apparently even the movie made as late as in 2005 on Subhash Chandra Bose invited criticism because it showed him as married to an Austrian woman. Probably the rights of democracy hadn’t yet come into picture when the movie was made (1946) :)) and people had better sense on what to protest against and what not to.
