Sources of Rumours – I

Call it the recent experience with rumours or whatever, I have  interested in the source of rumours. There are seevral possibilities. I will post them as and when I can think of them or come across them. As of now, my contention is that the sources are specific kinds of people. Later, this view might be modificed, but for now this is what I think. So, various sources will actually be about the different kinds of people who originate rumours. And probably certain circumstances which trigger them to start a rumour.

 Here is the first one.

Of course I know everything about everyone

These are the first kind of people, who originate rumours. So, you are talking about something/someone. Suddenly there is a question for which there is no answer – no body in the group knows for sure what had happened, who was there or something like that. But hey, no! There is one person who knows for sure. Come on! He/she is not as uninformed as the rest of the world about the things. It’s just not possible that he does not know everything. So, there is an answer and a confident one too… Of course, *that* is what had happened. *That* person is the one involved. And the whole point of “knowing” things is to elicit a “Wow” from people. So, you better ensure that the answer is a sensational one. There you go! Who can stop the rumours now?

  1. Oh wow, do I know people like that. My sister in fact is one of those people who prides herself in being part of the “In-Crowd” when with people outside of said crowd.. When, in reality, she isnt a member of aformentioned crowd at all, and just pretends to be to illicit the “Wow” factor from her friends. There are also those people who aparently feel that they have to share their lives with another person who also aparently feels the need to share their lives.. Lets call these people “Networked Rumor-Mill” Its sort of a good system for bad things, because in each “transmission” to the next rumor-mill node, something is altered. So, by the time the transmission reaches the person it is about, very little remains of the origional version of the transmission. In my opinion, these people are worse than the “Wow” factor people. Now when you mix the “Wow” factor people with the networked rumor-mill.. Look out..
