Just Like That

Mad, madira, madhu, haala sun-sun
Kar hi jab hoon matwaala,
Kya gati hogi jab adhron ke
Neeche aayega pyaala,
Saaki, mere paas na aana
Main paagal ho jaungaa;
Pyaasa hi main mast, mubarak
Ho tumko hi madhushala!

( Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Madhushala)

(Complete Madhushala in Devnagri is available on my “Writings Page“. Check out the section “Hindi Poems by Others”)

Literal Translation (To the extent I could do it)

When simply by hearing of various names of wine, I am feeling so high, what will happen to me when the wine-glass comes to my lips. O wine-maid, do not come near me, else I will go mad. I am fine while thirsty, keep the tavern for yourself.
